Caz Egelie (1994) engages with art history from the perspectives of an artist, curator, scenographer, dj and art educator. In their work Caz dissects constructions of ‘make-belief’, as they appear in both theatre and conceptual art. Through research in archives, close collaboration with performers and uncovering art histories, Caz’ process focuses on exploring ideas and expectations around ‘authenticity’ as it exists within the context of art, borrowing tactics from opera, theatre and film. Caz’s works consist of installations which combine different media like sculpture, video and painting, and are often presented in relation to performances in which costumes, scores and music play a large role.
Caz holds an MFA from the Sandberg Institute from the Re:Master Opera program, as well as a BFA in both Fine Art and Art Education from Hogeschool van de Kunsten Utrecht. Caz has been a teacher at HKU Fine Art and ArtEZ’ Teacher Course, as well as a guest teacher and residency coach at iArts Zuyd Hogeschool, De Nijverheid Utrecht and SIGN Groningen.

Previously, Caz has shown their work at CENTRALE Brussels, O Festival Rotterdam, Palais de Tokyo Paris, Siao Long Cultural Park Tainan, PINK Manchester, Open Space London, Van Gogh House London, National Gallery Prague, Lustwarande Tilburg, Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, Opera Forward Festival at the Dutch National Opera, Amsterdam Dance Event, Centraal Musem Utrecht and Plečnik House Ljubljana, amongst other places
